The Espriu Foundation, the world’s fourth largest network of health co-operatives, joins the celebration of International Co-operative Day, held this Saturday, and shows its support for this day to highlight the value of co-operative healthcare. As a private non-profit entity with the goal of promoting, explaining and developing comprehensive co-operative healthcare, the Espriu Foundation provided care for a total of 2.2 million people in Spain in 2017.

“We firmly believe in the triple role of cooperatives, as described by the International Co-operative Alliance: economic actors creating opportunities for jobs, people-centred enterprises, and democratic institutions,” in the words of the managing director of the Espriu Foundation, Carlos Zarco. “Growing with democracy, equity and social justice are what all of them are based on, and this is what makes cooperatives truly important,” he concluded.

Commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals

International Co-operative Day, held every year on the first Saturday of July, raises awareness of cooperatives. It explains how sustainability and resilience are at their heart, thanks to their values, principles and governance structures, and how they can improve the present and safeguard the future of new generations.

The International Co-operative Alliance, which represents 1.2 billion members of cooperatives, launched the campaign www.Coopsfor2030.coop in 2016 to show cooperatives’ commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and celebrate the cooperative contribution to making the world a better place.

This year, the members of the alliance are joining to publicise the work cooperatives do with the hashtag #CoopsDay.
